Firing Squad: February 2, 2010

Zimmerman is on a backcountry mission, which means I am running two super-mini shred shots just to spite him. Both are of snowboarding, both are at night. One features natural ambient light, the other completely manufactured. Seems like a battle to me, but you are the ones who decide.

The Champ

The Challenger

Think you can do better? Then quit your bitching. The Firing Squad is a weekly photo competition. Winners of a single battle will receive a pair of Da Kine gloves and should a photo survive 4 weeks, the photographer receives a place in the Champions Gallery and a Da Kine Camera Pack, as well as a chance to compete in the year-end Ultimate Champions battle. 1. Both decent shots … I see that Jolly Rancher color splash is in this year. Neither get me overly excited but both are technically solid. Going with the champ.

  2. how are people voting for the champ? granted the challenger is very centered, the lighting and quality of the photo are so much better.

    • You know… “these both suck” was never gonna win, and we sort of got over it. I think you guys need to start looking at each battle individually and realizing that one of these kids get gloves, so that’s pretty cool. We do our best to match up the photos to each other and realize not every photo will make it for the long haul, but we try and give as many different photographers a chance as possible. Besides, if ever photo was perfect, what would you hate on?

  3. The Champ on this one. The Challenger is not captivating enough. Maybe if there was some color splashed onto the snow mound. The champ has done a great job making a small rail look much more eye pleasing.

  4. Challenger, but really what is up with all the staged lighting? Is this a movie set? Where are the action shots from the mtns??? The shots show good knowledge of flashes and lighting, but what about the the mtns!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Would it kill you guys to put some shots of blue skies and pow up once in awhile. I aint a hater, just saying.

  5. the champ got the longest rail ever and the challanger is hardcore too… sorry no vote this week.

  6. I really like the color splashes and whatnot in the Champ’s shot, but I still can’t get over that shadow at the bottom of the frame… Gonna have to go with the Challenger on this one.

  7. We seriously get 2% shots taken at actual mountains. If that. Plus once we start these jib battles it seems weird to throw a pow shot in the mix but… Send us more!

  8. sign the photos properly, since it’s confusing which photo is the champ and whih is the challenger..

  9. i did like that top one… till i realized the rail is something a skater could shred to bits.. and that second picture.. something i woulda been a trick i was stoked to get when i was 12.

  10. “tricks you need trucks for” very nice
really like the balance between the natural lighting on the horizon and the lighting from the flash in the challenger’s
looks like there’s at least one person who didn’t follow the “skinny stance” trend though, doesn’t have much nose on that board at all

  11. this shit is really awful,i dunno why this is a trend this year, but you people need to cool it with these electro light color schemes.

  12. its as easy as this, rather than trying to pick shots that match up to one another, PICK DECENT SHOTS. there are countless things wrong with the past view posts on here, i guarentee people are submitting shots 10 times better than these and they deserve the credit rather than these kids who have no idea what they are doing and just pointing their flashes in the direction of the rider. these are snowperception level, and snowperception is whack as fuhhhhck. MAKE IT RIGHT!

  13. The challenger reminds me a bit of the handplant shot from HC a couple weeks ago. A bit too centered, but its still a sick ass shot. It gets my vote. Great use of the single flash

  14. the challengers shot looks technically flawless! so sharp, perfect color even in the sky, but the actual trick just looks so weak!

  15. First would be cool if the colors werent added and the shadow wasent there. The second is an easier trick sure, but were looking at the quality of pics, not the tricks.

And it looks like a dirt jump. Woulda been cooler to blast the jumps gap.

But either way the second looks a hell of alot better on the eyes.

  16. Thanks for not using of those super hard human verification image things…yours is easy to read and see…some sites they have really difficult images and I don’t know wtf is going on…is that a J or a j or a Y or maybe it is just a fucked up L? I don’t know…I just want my free annual credit report.

  17. @Bah: you have no idea if these kids have no idea what their doing. So dont assume things. The champ is the champ for a reason eh? Challenger is too simple, too centered, and just beat. Not very enertaining or fun to look at. The champ definately has it. So much more appeasing to the eye, and just better overall.

  18. you all care about what the rider is doing or where it is. who cares its a photo contest. what is most technical and artistic. Champ wins this one!
