This week in the hot seat we have Magic Hair Products. You may recognize the name from when you hated on one of the Magic Monday edits earlier this year, but no internet bullies are going to stop John Cywinski from making Magic Movie. With Midwest roots, the crew’s third effort will offer a greater variety of terrain and riders, but with the same down home sensibility. Here’s what John had to say about the forthcoming video.

What’s the story behind the name Magic Hair?

Remember the movie Chulksmack? Well the intro song had a line that said something about magic hair in it. The line just stuck out to me and I was kinda drawing a blank for any other names. I just went with it a long time ago and it’s been that way since.

Why do you think Midwest riders are so hot these days?

I personally think towropes play a big part. With a towrope you can get a ton more laps compared to a resorts out west with chairlifts. Growing up in Chicago, I rode at a little hill called Raging Buffalo. It was one basically a patch of snow 200 yards long with a towrope splitting it down the middle. It wasn’t much for jumps but there were plenty of kids that killed rails there.

Since you spend the winters in Colorado, home of the epic snowboard park, should we expect mostly park footage?

Nope, you’ll be seeing all street footage and a little bit of backcountry jumping. Everything that I filmed in the park was probably seen here on Yobeat in an edit at some point.

Does anything you shot this year really standout as a highlight that people should probably hold their breath for, starting now?

There’s a bunch of shit that everyone will hopefully be excited for, I am still editing the video, but so far it is turning out even better than I had expected.

Name names. Which rider killed it the hardest for your camera this year?

Kent Leng, he stacked up some hammers this year.

Did you learn anything from your last movie that you’re using to make this year’s extra awesome?

Prior to this year I was living in Chicago during the winters so it was definitely more difficult to film street there. So since the last video, I made it more of a priority to get out of the park and go film street, which worked out real well this past season.

You’re in college right? Do you think you’ll continue to pursue film once you’re done with school?

Yeah, college blows when you’re trying to film a video… Yeah, I hope to continue film one way or another after school is done. All I really want to do is film snowboarding but I really have no idea where I’ll be in another few years.

What do you think makes a snowboard video good?

I think it starts with good riding. If a video doesn’t have decent riding then nobody is going to want to watch it, but I think music, editing and filming also play a big part in making a good video.

What video are you most looking forward to this year?

There are a bunch of videos I am looking forward to. The new Videograss flick will undoubtedly be good. In Color has a great group of riders than I am looking forward to seeing. I am excited for House of 1817 the movie and Back to the Boneyard as well.

When is Magic Movie going to be done and how will you distribute it?

Magic Movie is a little past half-way done, so probably be a little more than a month until it is finished, and it will probably release for free on the world wide web in early August.

Until then, check out last year’s Bits and Pieces:
